Online applications, like we have on the Firstcall website, are great. They allow you to fill in your details, upload your CV and hit send. Hey presto, your application is on its way.
But don’t underestimate the power of a good cover letter. On our website there is a pre-written covering note which can be amended, or you can write your own. There’s an art to catching an employer’s attention and we would always recommend adding your own personal touch. They are, after all, people looking for people.
‘You can tell a lot about a person from a cover letter,’ one employer told us.
‘It shows an awful lot, and often candidates don’t realise that this is the case. Someone’s personality comes out in a letter, along with accuracy, attention to detail and, of course, spelling.
‘As an employer, one of our biggest bug bears is when a candidate does no research at all about our company. It soon becomes apparent at interview if the candidate knows little or nothing about who we are and what we do. If they come across in their covering letter as being knowledgeable and having done their homework on us, that goes a long way.
‘A good cover letter is worth its weight in gold.’
So, what should a good cover letter include? Well here’s a handy checklist:
- Contact information of yourself and the employer
- Introduce yourself
- Show your qualifications and qualities – this is the hard sell part
- Show that you’ve researched the company and how you fit with their goals and aims
- Let them know when you’re available for interview
- Sign off
Check and double check your letter for typos before sending it off with your CV.
